- O.E. plaster "medicinal application," from L. emplastra "a plaster," from Gk. emplaston "salve, plaster," from neut. of emplastos "daubed on," from en- "on" + plastos "molded," from plassein "to mold," originally "to spread thin." Plaster of Paris was originally made from the gypsum of Montmartre in Paris. Plastered "drunk" is attested from 1912.
